Image and Form’s SteamWorld Dig 2 was a big hit for Switch back in September, so it’s no wonder their SteamWorld Heist is coming to Switch just in time for the holidays. In the Ultimate Edition of this turn-based, action-packed strategy shooter, you’re Captain Piper Faraday, a pirate-ish smuggler leading a looting operation through a series of procedurally generated enemy spaceships. For support, you rely on your teammates, who boast unique (and upgradeable) abilities and weapons.
Unlike some strategy shooters that feature luck as a main force, SteamWorld Heist focuses almost purely on skill, so you’ll need to rely on yourself rather than luck to go far. And you’ll be aiming your weapon manually, so if you mess up a shot, you can’t blame bad luck. (And if you pull off a cool kill with your mad geometry skills, feel free to bask in your own glory!)
New players might want to try this game on one of the easier difficulty modes (there are five), but rest assured that you can change the difficulty level before each mission. So whether you’ve tried a hard mode that’s too hard or an easier mode that’s not hard enough, feel free to find the difficulty mode that works best for you. In this way, SteamWorld Heist is great for newbies and seasoned players alike.
SteamWorld Heist’s steampunk android characters are charming as ever. One of our favorite parts about these characters (other than their unique designs and hypnotic movements) are their hats, since you can shoot them off enemies’ heads! So if you spot an enemy wearing a hat you might like, see if you can shoot the hat. (Of course, shooting the hat doesn’t damage the character itself, so be careful if you’re in a dangerous situation!)
With SteamWorld Heist: Ultimate Edition, you get plenty of replayability, with 15-20 hours of gameplay, NewGame+ (a harder unlockable mode), and procedurally generated levels. And on top of all this, you get gorgeous HD graphics and a killer soundtrack by steampunk group Steam Powered Giraffe.
SteamWorld Heist: Ultimate Edition has been carefully optimized for Nintendo Switch, with touch screen controls front and center: this entire game can be played with your fingertips, allowing for a super-casual play experience. Plus, this Switch-exclusive version comes with Outsider Campaign, previously released as DLC, which offers a mysterious new ally, fresh hats and weapons, and additional levels. (This DLC was also included in the WiiU and PS4 versions of the game.)
So whether you’re a newcomer to SteamWorld Heist or a seasoned veteran, we think you’ll have a blast with this indie strategy shooter if you like what you’ve seen in our review. Of course, this game is available on several platforms this holiday season, so if you’re not a Switch enthusiast, you might want to look into your other options. But if you love the Nintendo Switch like we do, head on over to the Nintendo eShop to download SteamWorld Heist: Ultimate Edition this holiday!
