Milanoir is a story-driven twin stick shooter inspired by Italian crime films of the 1970s. You’ll play as Piero, a mobster imprisoned after a job gone awry. When he’s released, Piero is out for blood, determined to find and kill whoever set him up. This Tarantino-esque story is filled with twists, turns, violence, and strong language, so it feels more like a dark comedy than a revenge plot. Play alone or with a friend—but we suggest that you don’t play with kids, because there’s plenty of mature content in here!
Milanoir plays as separate chapters featuring unique scenarios, so the game never feels repetitive. Each chapter introduces new gameplay elements, but the core elements are aiming and shooting while evading enemy fire. You’ll move with the left stick and aim with right, and this will take some getting used to. But since new gameplay elements are introduced at a reasonable pace, you’ll have no problem adapting to the controls as you play.
Milanoir is pretty hard, even on its lowest difficulty setting. But with enough practice, you’ll be good enough to get through the story by yourself. Playing co-op might help too, but keep in mind that a run is done if one player dies, so you’ll both need to stay alive to advance. Whether you play alone or with a friend, your skills will be put to the test, and beating this game will definitely take some time.
Milanoir’s stylish pixel art is stunning, and we couldn’t have asked for a better-looking game. Every nook and cranny of its visual design features unique, detailed pixel art, and its style fits perfectly with Milanoir’s twisted tone. And the cherry on top of it all? A rockin’ 1970s-inspired soundtrack that puts you in the perfect state of mind. The end result is a treat for the senses, and we applaud the developers for their clear dedication to this project.
Milanoir is definitely worth checking out if you’re a mature player looking for an action-packed, story-driven adventure. The controls take some getting used to, but this effort is worth it to experience the game’s story. Milanoir is and stays fresh in every respect, and the optional co-op mode only sweetens the deal. The game offers a truly unique experience, and we’re glad to see Nintendo allowing mature content on its hardware.
