Light Fall is a fast-paced adventure platformer driven by the story of Numbra, a deteriorating world. You’ll awake to find that your fellow villagers have seemingly disappeared, you’ll embark on a guided journey to learn why your world is falling apart and what you must do to save it. Light Fall borrows its main mechanics from indie platforming classics like Super Meat Boy, but it also introduces mechanics of its own like the Shadow Core, a cube platform you can summon to execute double-, triple-, and quadruple-jumps. As you move through the game’s three winding levels, you’ll save ice-trapped villagers and collect golden shards, which unlock pieces of the game’s mysterious lore.
You’ll jump, run, and climb your way through the game’s long and winding levels, each with various checkpoints to keep the difficulty more balanced and forgiving. At the end of each level, you’ll fight a boss, and though these fights can be difficult, they are generally enjoyable with their combinations of puzzles, patterns and platforming. New enemies and obstacles will arise as you progress through each level, and you’ll grow to use your Shadow Core in different ways to solve the game’s puzzles.
You can play Light Fall in several different modes. In addition to the game’s standard mode, there’s a hard mode, which ramps up the difficulty and takes away your checkpoints. Then there’s a speed-running mode, which lets you master individual levels or the whole game. This mode includes online leaderboards and the ability to watch the ghosts of other players, allowing you to be inspired by and learn from your fellow Light Fall players.
Light Fall’s minimalist graphics use lighter colors for backgrounds and decorative items, reserving darker colors for platforms you can interact with, and though Nintendo Switch allows for graphics far more advanced than Light Fall’s, we wouldn’t trade this game’s simple style for anything. The basic graphics are a perfect fit for Light Fall’s fast-paced gameplay and dark theme, and their smooth appearance offers a calming effect. Light Fall’s graphics are complemented by its multi-faceted sound design, including sharp sound effects, an intensely atmospheric soundtrack, and immersive voice acting.
Light Fall appeals to newcomers and seasoned platformers alike with its smooth presentation and unique mechanics, and we think its helpful ghosts and leaderboards make it a great introduction to the art of platforming speedruning. While it’s not the best indie platformer out there, it’s good for the price, and its graphics make it stand out, and we think any gamer looking for a fun platformer on Switch should consider Light Fall as their next indie download.
