Devil Engine

Devil Engine is an incredibly fasted 2D bullet storm action shooter that sees you take control of an experimental spacecraft as you pilot through six relentless levels. While they quickly grow in difficulty, these levels send wave after wave of enemies across your path, challenging you to dodge the onslaught of bullets as you take down your foes. Featuring hand drawn pixel art, three different shot types, eight different game modes, and a soundtrack as intense as the game itself, you’ll be hard pressed to find a better game suited for this genre.

This game immediately took me back to the arcade I used to go to when I was younger. My brother and I would always play games like this, and Devil Engine is a brilliant recreation of those games. Not only does this game boast impressive visuals and a killer soundtrack, the game is also incredibly challenging. You’re initially thrust into the action on hard mode, and only after a humbling first play through are you given the chance to play on an easier difficulty. Even though this game is a little niche, I would highly recommend it for anyone looking to take a trip back in time to the good old days of the arcade.

Tricky Towers

Tricky Towers is a party-puzzle game that requires you to take a variety of shaped blocks and stack them up in order to create a stable tower and reach a specific height. Play the game solo, or compete with up to four total players as you explore three different game modes, providing plenty of opportunities for you to hone your stacking skills.

It’s obvious what the inspiration for Tricky Towers was, and where Tetris has its limitations (whether they be technologically imposed or formulaically imposed), this game does its best to break the conventions and forge its own path. I really liked what the development team did to effectively use a physics engine that challenges every player to create stable towers, and the variety of ways to play the game and complete the challenges more than warrants the price. This game is one I really enjoyed and would recommend it to all puzzle fans.

Necrosphere Deluxe

Necrosphere Deluxe is an action metroidvania game that boasts an incredibly charming pixelated art style, simple to use but difficult to master two button controls, and a maze like layout that will keep you guessing at every turn. The Necrosphere is where you end up once you die; regardless of if you were good or bad. As Agent Terry Cooper, you must explore the Necrosphere to find the portals that take you back to the Normalsphere. Don’t worry though; you have an eternity to find them with nothing else to do!

I had a ton of fun playing this game. While it isn’t particularly long (about 3 hours for me to play through), the controls are very tight and the quick reload times ensure you’re never away from the action too long after you die (and you will die… a lot…). There are also some very satisfying platforming moments and the fundamental challenge of the game is reminiscent of Super Meat Boy. I’m a big fan of the ballet suit, and the secret you unlock after collecting the DVDs is worth the hard work to collect them. This game is an incredible value for the amount of fun you’ll have, and the challenging gameplay will keep you coming back to it.

Super Treasure Arena

Super Treasure Arena is a retro-inspired arcade arena shooter that provides lots of pixelated chaos, especially when played with four other humans. You can choose from the five playable character classes and battle it out on one of six top-down maps. The two different game modes, Classic and Treasure Run, allow you to cater your game to fit whatever mood you are in, with one mode service as a free-for-all (Classic) and the other serving as more of a capture-the-flag style of play (Treasure Run).

At the heart of the game, Super Treasure Arena is designed to offer some fast paced fun between friends. Unfortunately it falls very short in the ‘fun’ department, ultimately making this game a bit of a dud. The combat in the game presents some frustrating inconsistencies depending on which way you’re fighting the other players, the gameplay modes don’t offer anything new to the very tired arena combat formula, and the expansive content simply amounts to skin swaps or the slightest variations on design. While this game is affordable, it’s still one that I would stay away from.

Soulblight is a gritty and intensely challenging top-down action RPG that has the player constantly weighing the consequences of their actions. Featuring a dark tone and randomly generated levels, this game uses a unique Tainting mechanic in place of traditional experience points. Your choices in game give you a certain number personality traits to choose from. These act as your main source of strength on your quest. Whether you abide by these personality traits is also up to you, but it may prove costly if you don’t.

I’ve always been a fan of rogue-like games, and the Nintendo Switch has become the home to so many foundational titles in the genre. Soulblight definitely delivers in style, with its gritty landscapes and overall dark tone, and the Taint mechanic offers a unique spin on what can become a very repetitive adventure, but beyond these things, this game fails to really stand out amongst the catalog of other quality rogue-likes. The unrelenting difficulty also serves as a greater deterrent, rather than a motivator and this game ultimately failed to keep me coming back to explore its world, and I would steer clear of this one.
