Desert Child

Desert Child uses RPG elements for a fresh take on the racing genre. Play as a young dude with determination, whose only friend is a hoverbike. Your goal? Make it to Mars, compete in the Grand Prix, and win the coveted title of first-place. Gameplay consists of racing horizontally against another biker as you dodge obstacles or blast them out of your way. Between races, you’ll meet fellow racers, sell collected items, make sure your bike is in tip-top shape, and fuel your mind with ramen noodles. Interactions with shopkeepers and other NPCs are humorous and clever, while pixelated graphics take on a unique palette of drab, moody colors that make Desert Child stand out.

Desert Child is well-made with a distinct art style and an incredible soundtrack, but it leaves much to be desired where gameplay is concerned. Racing takes some getting used to, but even then, it still feels a bit off and repetitive. Don’t expect drifting or other typical 3D racing elements in Desert Child, since this game is an old-school-style 2D side-scroller. Players looking for a traditional 3D racing game like Mario Kart or Crash Team Racing should look elsewhere. But players searching for a seriously fresh take on the racing genre should consider picking up Desert Child, especially if it’s on sale.

Cities: Skylines

Cities: Skylines is a simulation game that has you build, grow, and maintain a city, all from the ground up. You must build everything a city requires to function, ensuring the water lines, sewer systems, and electrical grids are all connected and functioning properly. You’ll zone the residential, industrial, and business districts, all while monitoring your constituents’ complaints, needs, and desires through a Twitter-esque social media platform. Play with limited funds for an authentic experience, or choose unlimited funds to let your creativity run wild! Cities: Skylines offers tutorials for everything you need to succeed, but there are lots of elements to micromanage, and you’ll need to quickly address problems as they arise.

The Cities: Skylines switch port runs and handles well, and frame drops only happen when you’ve got a huge city with tons happening at once. Even then, frame drops and slow-downs aren’t common, and the graphics look excellent whether you’re playing in handheld or docked mode. Handheld mode is a great option for players looking to build up their city in short bursts, while docked mode provides an immersive experience, especially on a big-screen TV. Watching your hard efforts transform a piece of land into a thriving metropolis is super rewarding, and sim fans will likely love their experience with this game. If you’re not 100% sold on this title, you might want to wait for a sale, but one thing’s for certain—Cities: Skylines feels right at home on Nintendo Switch!

OVERWHELM

OVERWHELM is a action-oriented platformer with minimalistic Virtual Boy-esque graphics. Your goal is to traverse a metroid-style map in search of five different bosses, each guarding a gem. The road to each boss is tough: you’ve only got 3 lives per run (and each life is one-hit-and-done), and your ammo is very limited. As you continue slaying bosses, your road to the next boss is even more dangerous, since your enemies intensify viciously in difficulty. Once you’ve acquired the five boss-guarded gems, it’s time to assemble them in the middle of the map—and get the heck outta there!

The gameplay may sound basic, and it is, but that doesn’t make it easy. When you first jump into OVERWHELM, you’ll likely die a lot, especially when you’re first getting used to the tough-to-master controls. The twin sticks make you move and aim, while L lets you jump. Even after re-mapping these controls, you still might have a tough time mastering them. But despite our gripes over the controls, the gameplay is addictive and enjoyable. And to reduce tedium and increase fun, if you die after killing a boss, you have the option of starting a new run from the boss’s location. So if you’re looking for a challenge, OVERWHELM will definitely deliver, and at its reasonable price point, it’s easy to recommend this title to anyone with patience, quick reflexes, and skill. But if you’re easily frustrated, you may want to skip this title or wait for a sale.

Disc Jam

Disc Jam is a futuristic sports title blending elements from tennis and discus throwing. Play one-on-one or two-on two and aim to score fifty points to win a set, with the first player or team to take two sets winning the game. Points are earned by throwing your discus past your opponent and hitting the goal behind them. The controls can be tough to get used to, so we recommend playing the tutorials and maybe even taking on a CPU opponent or two before jumping into online play. Online mode requires Nintendo Switch Online and matches players from around the world. Matchmaking only takes a minute or so, even though Disc Jam isn’t the most popular online game with the biggest player base.

Disc Jam is all about quick maneuvers and spot-on timing. You’ll need to aim the joy-stick just right if you want to catch your opponent off guard. Disc Jam is extremely fast-paced, and it took us a long time to get anywhere close to the skill level required to win a match. If you want to get good, you need to take time to learn all the tricks, understand the tactics, and master the controls—and for some players, this can be a recipe for frustration and disaster. If you’re a fan of tennis-style games and in the mood for a challenge, you should definitely consider checking this one out. Otherwise, you might want to skip out on Disc Jam.

Rogue Legacy

Originally released in 2013, Rogue Legacy is an action-platformer with roguelite elements that feels right at home on Nintendo Switch. You’ll begin the game as an heir to the throne who tries to probe the depths of a mysterious shape-shifting castle. Gathering coins is a main objective, since coins allow you to upgrade your character’s traits, damage output, and health, among other stats. Each new run changes the castle’s layout. Rooms are ever-changing, and navigating too deeply before you’re fully prepared is extremely dangerous.

You’ll likely die hundreds of times, if you play the game long enough, but dying isn’t all that bad. With each death comes new life in the form of the next heir to the throne. Each new generation has its own quirk, which affects gameplay in curious ways. Quirks include OCD, color blindness, and vertigo, to name a few. An OCD run encourages players to break every last thing for bonus points, a color blind run renders everything in black and white, and a vertigo run makes everything upside-down with reversed controls. There are 33 quirks to experience, offering almost endless freshness and replayability.

Rogue Legacy is one of the best roguelites of all time. Controls are tight, enemies are varied, and every last castle environment is fully fleshed out with gorgeous pixel art. Even after sinking hours into Rogue Legacy, you’ll be left with tons of things to accomplish and unlock. Rogue Legacy is a must-own for fans of roguelites and action-oriented platformers, and for only $14.99, we guarantee you won’t be disappointed. This game has aged like wine, and we recommend checking it out for yourself.
