With what is already being deemed by some as the winning presentation of E3 2017, Nintendo had a great showing during their digital event and ensuing Treehouse Live presentations. In addition to the game reveals that certainly created buzz and excitement, what has made this E3 incredibly strong for them was the reveal of 13 new amiibo that are to be released in addition to the 10 amiibo already confirmed from earlier in the year. While only 4 of the amiibo were revealed during Nintendo’s digital event, the other 9 were revealed shortly after through a variety of digital platforms.
Kicking the amiibo announcements off are 4 additional amiibo for the Legend of Zelda series; the four champions from the different regions in the Legend of Zelda: Breath of Wild. Mipha, the Zora Champion; Revali, the Rito Champion; Urbosa, the Gerudo Champion; Daruk, the Goron Champion will release at the same time as the second DLC pack, during the 2017 holiday season.
The Super Mario line of amiibo is growing as well and with the upcoming release of Super Mario Odyssey this wasn’t exactly a surprise to fans. What was a surprise was the theme they chose for the three main characters. Nintendo has chosen to release Odyssey specific amiibo of Mario, Princess Peach, and Bowser all clad in wedding attire! I think these amiibo look really great, and I’m excited to pick them up! In addition to the three ‘wedding’ themed amiibo, a goomba and green koopa troopa amiibo will also be released in the Super Mario series.
With what I thought was the most surprising amiibo reveal as far as characters are concerned, Nintendo showed us two new figures for the Fire Emblem amiibo line: Chrom and Tiki. These two amiibo are going to be released in support of the upcoming Fire Emblem Warriors title.
Saving the best amiibo announcement for last is the one I did not see coming at all! The two new amiibo that will be paired with the release of Metroid 2: Samus Returns are some of my favorite amiibo revealed at E3! I love this pose for Samus, and the Metroid busting out of the tube is such a cool concept for an amiibo. It’s also been detailed that the Metroid amiibo is squishy to simulate the jellyfish nature of it!
While we don’t know much about the details of the in-game capabilities of these amiibo, the fact that Nintendo is continually expanding on the different amiibo lines that are available to fans bodes well for the future of the toys-to-life accessory. Nintendo has truly outdone itself so far in 2017, and I look forward to the eventual release of all of these amiibo and the games they will support.
