Another day, more Nintendo news: coming to a crime scene near you, a brand-new Detective Pikachu amiibo has been announced and will retail for $29.99. The amiibo will be released on March 23, accompanied by its partner-in-crime, a new Detective Pikachu 3DS game. Lastly, Nintendo also announced that a new Pikachu Edition of its 2DSXL console will be available later this month as well.
The Detective Pikachu amiibo will be about double the size of a standard amiibo, coming in at 5.1 inches; for comparison, a standard amiibo is about 2.75 inches high. The base also features a map-styled printing, a first for any amiibo. The amiibo functionality is pretty simple, “by tapping the extra-large Detective Pikachu amiibo™ figure while playing the Detective Pikachu™ game, you will be able to view all the Pika Prompts you’ve seen or might have missed from the chapters you’ve already cleared. Experience over 150 animated short movie clips of Detective Pikachu providing helpful hints or talking up a storm.”
The New Nintendo 2DS XL Pikachu Edition will be available at retailers starting January 26, carrying the price tag of $159.99, which is $10 more than the standard NN2DSXL version. It does seem fitting that the Pikachu Edition would launch near the release of a new stand-alone Pikachu game.
The original Detective Pikachu game was released on the Japanese Nintendo eShop on February 3, 2016, while the original Pikachu Edition 2DSXL came out on November 17, 2017. It was an exclusive to Pokémon Center stores. Both the new amiibo and game will launch simultaneously for Europe and North America, while the NN2DSXL Pikachu Edition is a North America-only release for the moment.
