Nintendo has announced that, starting in early March, My Nintendo members will be able to use their banked Gold Points for “select” digital purchases on the Nintendo Switch.
If you’re unfamiliar with the rewards program, you can sign up through this link, but if you have a Nintendo Account (most probably do) then you’re good to go. It must be linked to your Nintendo Network ID in order to obtain Gold Points for purchases, however. Essentially, when purchasing digital games and content through the eShop on 3DS, Wii U, and Switch, you earn Gold Points, which can be redeemed for specific titles offered by Nintendo. Fun fact: you also can earn Gold Points when buying the physical game through any store, albeit in the amount of 1% of the eShop price.
Also, keep in mind that Gold Points expire 12 months after being issued. Anyone who purchased Breath of the Wild through the eShop back in March should stay tuned for this feature being used, as you may lose your Points before this is supposed to roll out.
There is no word yet on the ability to redeem Platinum Points for anything on the Switch, but Nintendo will probably add this feature some point down the road, as many people still earn and use Platinum Points daily. Nintendo says more details are on the way, and once they’re announced we’ll be sure to present an update as well.
